After Peter Burke asked the game-changing question “How to be a counter-reformation saint?”, it became clear that there cannot be any saint without a profile established in a vita and further literary sources. Following up, Simon Ditchfield outlined the working definition of early modern writings about saints and candidates to sanctity. In the paper, the understanding of post-Tridentine hagiography will be further enhanced by focusing on the specific features of the genre and stressing its pragmatic and legal contexts.
