The first volume of a biographical monograph of one of the most important Czech prose writers of the second half of the twentieth century.

The author traces the work of Josef Škvorecký from his juvenile attempts through his first mature (and in the 1950s unpublishable for political reasons) manuscripts to the period of growing popularity in the 1960s. The book also focuses on Škvorecký’s activities as a translator and screenwriter. It concludes with Škvorecký’s departure for Canadian exile in January 1969.
