Příležitost pro poezii. Blahopřejné a oslavné básně v českých časopisech první poloviny 19. století

Andrea Vítová

Occasional poetry, especially verse congratulations and celebratory poems of various types, formed a large part of Czech literature in the first half of the 19th century.

Seemingly insignificant works, on the edge of verbal art and social convention, reflected social events in an important way and, as a permanent part of periodicals, could also actively participate in them: they entered into the functioning of relations in patriotic circles and also participated in public festivals, from local events to events of national scope. In thematically focused chapters, the book discusses the spheres in which occasionalism found a place, progressing from the family environment to the official level. It traces the way in which a genre with distinctive rules took shape, noting in particular the functions that occasional poems assumed in particular times and situations. He bases his interpretation on quotations from texts selected from contemporary newspapers and magazines.
