Kritika a autonomie českého umění (1859–1892)

Martin Hrdina, Eva Bendová, Michal Fránek, Ladislav Futtera, Michal Charypar, Jiří Kopecký

This work examines the autonomization of cultural production in the second half of the 19th century, looking specifically at the example of Czech art.

Czech art provides a particularly interesting context for exploring the autonomization of art, one in which the differentiation of artistic creation and rapid rise in both quantity and quality outpaced the political and economic emancipation of the subaltern ethnic minority. As a starting point for conceptualizing the social negotiation of the autonomy of art, the authors of the present publication chose the historical course of this process in France and its analysis along sociological lines (P. Bourdieu). Inspired by a certain methodological correction vis-à-vis the reception of contemporary art (M. Einfalt), they highlight the ongoing critical commentary on emerging cultural production, specifically literary, musical, and visual works – their classification of types of critical expression also draws on the French context (A. Thibaudet). A central aim of the work is to correct persistent claims about the deficiency of Czech criticism before the 1890s, which can be traced back to the first modernist critics and their self-presentation.
